This symposium will present recent findings and new insights into demographic, health, and lifestyle factors that contribute to brain ageing and cognitive decline. It will briefly review some of the major mechanisms linked with the neurodegeneration which progressively develops across the adult lifespan while also considering how typical brain ageing trajectories may vary between individuals exposed to different risk factors. The impact of age-related changes in brain health on cognitive functioning will be considered. Finally, important implications for policy and population health will be discussed.
