The Australian Diabetes and Obesity Study Wave 3 is an ongoing, longitudinal national research project designed to better understand the causes and the consequences of diabetes, heart disease and chronic kidney disease in Australia. Led by researchers at the Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, the third wave of data collection for this study examines the association between cognitive function and diabetes, heart disease and chronic kidney disease. Both diabetes and cardiovascular disease are well-established risk factors for cognitive decline in late life and dementia. Over 10,000 people around Australia have participated in the study, providing valuable data for understanding the impact of these diseases on brain health. This project is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) project grant and will involve the participation of a number of researchers from various research organisations in addition to Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute. These will include Monash University, The University of Melbourne, the Centre for Eye Research Australia, The University of Sydney, The Australian National University, University of Canberra, University of Queensland and U1018 INSERM (a medical research institute in Paris, France).
