Multi-D

Funded by a National Roads and Motorists Association (NRMA) Road Safety Trust Grant, this project will develop a prototype of a novel older driver screening battery (Multi-D) and translate this battery to research, clinical and driver assessment settings.

The battery is well validated and accurately discriminates safe from unsafe drivers and translates 10 years of road safety research into real world application. On-road validation testing in two samples has shown the Multi-D discriminates safe-from unsafe drivers with high sensitivity and specificity.

The next stage in our research plan is to develop tailored interventions to improve the skills of older drivers, using the Multi-D as an assessment tool to identify areas where drivers can improve. Although the focus of our research has been older drivers, younger or middle-aged adults with neurological or visual disorders that impair abilities measured by this battery will also be identified as unsafe drivers.
