Ruth Kharis is a final year interdisciplinary PhD candidate at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at ANU and she is an associate of the ANU Climate Change Institute. Her thesis on Australian food policy explores how policy actors develop food policy that integrates health goals and environmental goals. Ruth has presented her PhD research to national and international conferences including the: 15th World Congress on Public Health 2017 (Melbourne), 11th Interpretive Policy Analysis Conference 2016 (Hull - UK) and Population Health Congress 2015 (Hobart). In 2016, as a social scientist she was one of 44 Australian PhD candidates chosen to participate in the inaugural Australian-French Entrepreneurial Challenge. Their cross-disciplinary PhD team – Resthera were semi-finalists when they designed a new and profitable start-up venture over twenty four hours.
As an Accredited Practising Dietitian her qualifications include a BSc and a Diploma of Nutrition and Dietetics. Furthermore, Ruth has a Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Management, and a Master of Environmental Planning. Her career comprises working 20 years for the Federal, State, and Territory governments, in Health and Environment Departments. In 2019 and 2018 she was a Dietitians Association of Australia Representative for the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations - Food Sustainability Initiative. In 2015, she was a consultant reviewer of the; ACT State Of the Environment Report 2015 - What does the changing environment mean? Her professional memberships include the International Public Policy Association, Agri-Food Research Network and the International Political Science Association.
