New grants/funding

  • Yuehan Joyce Zhang was awarded a scholarship to attend the Young Statistician’s Conference 2019
  • Muhammad Shahdaat Bin Sayeed on behalf of the RSPH Student Conference was awarded the Student Extracurricular Enrichment Fund (SEEF) from ANU Postgraduate and Research Students Association (PARSA)

Keynote and invited presentations

  • Emily Banks presented the Basil Hetzel Oration keynote at the Australian Public Health Conference on September 17th 

Other conference presentations

  • Muhammad Shahdaat Bin Sayeed was a convenor and MC at the recent RSPH Student Conference
  • Jenny Welsh presented on the Whole-of-Population-Health linked data project at the Young Statisticians Conference in Canberra on 30 September

RSPH Workshops and seminars

  • Kamalini Lokuge and the Humanitarian Health Research Initiative (HHRI) team held a public panel discussion on ‘Fighting Ebola: Achieving positive social and health outcomes in emergencies’ on Wednesday 4 Sep. Approximately 50 people attended the discussion.
  • Kamalini Lokuge and the HHRI team held a seminar and discussion on Thursday, 5 Sep for NCEPH (9:30 am – 1 pm) on co-production, knowledge exchange, working with service and policy organisations, and working in humanitarian and crisis settings. Speakers included: Ms Manah Dindi (Papua New Guinea – National Department of Health) on health research priorities in PNG, Dr Tejshri Shah (HHRI team) and Mr Pete Buth (MSF Board) on conducting research with Medecins Sans Frontieres, Dr Stephanie Williams (DFAT) on how policy organisations use evidence and ways to engage, Dr Darryl Stellmach (MSF) focused on social research in complex emergencies, and Prof Jennifer Leaning spoke about collaboration in humanitarian research.

Awards

  • Ray Lovett received an award from Indigenous Allied Health Australia, sponsored by the Lowitja Institute, for the "2019 Contribution to Indigenous Research Award".

Implementation, Engagement and Outreach

  • Cathy Day presented a lecture to the University of the Third Age about DNA and Identity
  • Ben O’Neill travelled to Perth to teach at a student conference
  • Emily Banks was a reviewer on the NHMRC grant review panel for the week
  • Katie Thurber was an ECR Observer on the NHMRC grant review panel for one day in cohort studies and clinical trials.
  • Jenny Welsh and Ellie Paige have been appointed as the Australasian Epidemiological Association ACT Chapter coordinators. 
  • Roxanne Jones attended the SNAICC Conference in Adelaide to host a stall there and raise awareness about the Mayi Kuwayu survey and recruit participants. 7 surveys were completed
  • The MK study has almost reached 8,000 surveys
  • Alyson and Ray held a data analysis course in Alice Springs with the local communities
  • The Mayi Kuwayu Data Governance Committee held a two day workshop in the Commons Room, Uni House. The objective of the workshop was to complete and finalise the various forms and guidelines associated with data use from the first wave of the Mayi Kuwayu surveys
  • Shavaun Wells and Tamara Riley attended the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Environmental Health Conference in Perth, Western Australia (16 - 19th Sept 2019). The aim of the conference is to increase the understanding and awareness of environmental health issues in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.’
  • Ray Lovett and Emily Colonna travelled to Broken Hill on Friday September 27 to attend the celebrations of the hand back of Mutawinji National Park on September 28 2019
